Publishing as Practice

Subtropical Ghosts and Memory Potions: Towards Brewing an Affective Archive of Yerba Mate was developed alongside an exhibition presented at the Undisciplined Ethnobotany conference in Montpellier, France.

Created in collaboration with Camila Chebez and Danuka Ana Tomas, the publication extends the project beyond the exhibition space, allowing its research to circulate in a tactile and accessible form.

Combining essays, field notes, pigment studies, photographs, recipes, and material experiments, the zine traces the journey of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) across Argentina and Switzerland. It explores how a single plant can reveal intertwined histories of ecology, extraction, migration, green colonialism, and cultural memory, while foregrounding artistic making as a way of engaging with these narratives.

Rather than functioning as exhibition documentation, the publication invites readers to participate in the research process. Alongside reflections on the project, it includes practical recipes for brewing fermented yerba mate soda and producing natural lake pigments from yerba mate leaves, encouraging readers to continue experimenting with the material themselves. In this way, the zine becomes both an archive and a toolkit - a publication that extends the life of the project through making, sharing, and collective learning.
