Participatory Pigment Labs
The Participatory Pigment Labs bring together participants across disciplines and age groups to investigate colour through shared making. Each workshop responds to local plants, stories, and materials while extending an evolving research methodology.
Material Promises: The Making of Natural Pigments
A three-day workshop developed during International Workshop Week at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Participants explored natural pigment making as a situated process where colour is relational, unstable, and shaped by context.
The process moved from intuitive responses to colour, through extraction and precipitation, to grinding and reactivating pigments for painting. Across these stages, the workshop focused on care, material attention, and shifting relationships to colour through making.
BKA International School Workshop
A school-adapted format for children aged seven to eight, designed around curiosity, experimentation, and learning through doing. Delivered at BKA International School while representing GLC Edutrip, it introduces colour as a living material rather than a fixed category.
The format is structured in three stages: extraction, pigment-making, and paint activation. Children begin with plant-based colour extraction and simple pH experiments, continue by transforming local plant material into lake pigment, and finish by grinding and mixing pigments into paint they can use and take home.
Alongside making, the format opens reflection on colour and emotion. Initial answers often follow familiar codes (for example, "blue is sad" or "yellow is happy"), but material experimentation helps children build more personal and diverse associations. In this way, colour is explored as relational, changing, and connected to memory, context, and experience.
